Chapter 28:
Let Me Go

Alexander got on broad the Apollo station orbiting around the charred Purelif. Walking by, many people laid around and/or leaning against the walls of the corridors wounded, sick, tired, and hungry. Most clustered in the hanger bays. Medical rooms flooded with countless patients begging for help. Some marines volunteered to assist the doctors treat them.

When he got to a hangar, he sat on a small bench. Across from him, a family clumped together to each other for support. Their three children and the mother tried to seal them of the suffering. The father wrapped them in a thick big blanket and held them as much as he could. As he looked them, he never felt that much pain since his mother's death.

No one had a home anymore. No one knew what to do or where to go. Alexander just threw his head to the palms and cried. He lost everyone he cared for so much. All because of Seiton.

    "Why Seiton?" Alexander mumbled. "Why?"

Then a medical officer came up to him carrying an emergency kit. She took out her stitches and bandages. She told him to take off his shirt to treat his wounds. Massive bruises covered his back and stomach. Scratches went across his chest and shoulders, dripping blood. She hesitated as she never seen blue blood before.

"Sir, your blood is blue," she said as she searched in her kit for medicine. "I'm going to need to run tests on you. Do you have a fever, sore throat, nausea; any symptoms in you are having right now?"

Alexander shook his head. "I'm just born with blue blood."

"I am going to check you vital signs," she informed him. She placed a pad on his chest and looked at his vital signs on her portal computer. His Spacer breathing and heart rhythm displayed on the computer, looking abnormal.

She shook her head, "Sir I need to take you to the medical bay immediately. Your vitals are not in well condition."

"They're normal!" Alexander snapped as he was swinging his hand feeling annoyed by her. "Leave me alone!"

She puts the instruments back into her kit; backing away as if he was an angry dog wanting a chuck of meat. She opened her backpack and handed him some clothes.

"Here, put clean clothes on," she said as she started leaving. "Also clean yourself up in the bathroom."

As she left to examine a family, Alexander went into a bathroom. He got into the bathroom as a terrible mess. He had cuts on his limbs, his face and hair covered in dirt and smoke, and his clothes shredded.

He threw cups of water into his face, grabbed a handful of paper towels, and wiped his face. He shook the dust off his hair and soaked it with water. Then he striped the battle-ripped clothes off of himself. He may had put new clean clothes on, but he still had his marks.

As he got back to the hangar, many raised their hands in the air marines gave out food. One marine offered Alexander a grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup. Across from him, a mother with two children had no food. They looked at his meal as if it's the biggest feast he was about to eat. He didn't want to eat, so he gave it to them and they thanked him so dearly. As people saw him sharing his food, so they split it so everyone would have a fair share.

As he left the hanger bay, he saw many families crying against a wall. The wall was covered with photos of men, women, and children who lost their lives during this massacre. A few kissed the photos as if they're still alive. Others held each other tightly to coupe their loved ones. He left that corridor to try to escape the sorrow, but it was impossible.

Alpha said as he followed him. "I truly understand how people from various races feel about war and losing their loved ones."

"Yeah," Alexander sniffed. "Why would anyone do this?"

"For power, money, and prosperity," Alpha answered.

"That makes me feel better," he glared.

    "Sorry," said Alpha.

Alexander leaned against a wall of another corridor. A holographic television above him popped out a news reporter. "Welcome to CNN ladies and gentlemen, Ryan Monk reporting with breaking news! Recently, 56 millions of citizens on Purelif have been slaughtered by the Threshers. Sarah Anderson has the story."

Sarah Anderson on screen, "Thanks Ryan. I'm in the hangar bay of the Apollo Station. Behind me are clusters of families gathering around to try to support each other as best they could. A few medical officers and marines are offering their last portions to these victims and tried to treat each person at a time."

Sarah Anderson disappeared and another news reporter appeared. "This is Kelly McCain. According to the victims, the reason for the invasion of Purelif was because some ancient portal was rebuild. This caused the Threshers to travel through and attack. No one knows how this happened or who did it. But this portal exploded, destroying the majority of the fleet. This prevented more Threshers from coming into this region."

Then there was a footage of a little girl cried in the news, "Lost my little puppy!"

Another image of a boy cried, "I lost my mommy and grandma!"

An image of a man wept, "My family lost our home; I don't have a job anymore; lost all my friends; my son's in the emergency room; everyone else is dead."

As he listened to the news and the victims, his pain increased so much that he felt as though he couldn't breathe. He slid to the floor and curled into a ball. Alpha hovered over and turned off the news for him.

    "Thanks," he said quietly.

    "Anytime," said Alpha.

    "So what now?" he asked.

"I don't know," said Alpha. "It's up to you to decide."

Alexander stayed sitting down curled up. He heard many cries and painful moans of everyone around him on the station. This made him remember when the Cobains were attacked by the Threshers. Sounds of the weapon fire echoed down his ears. Blood splattered across the land. Thunder crashing from the sky as ships rolled in. Seeing his mother died in front of him. She protected and loved him so much as he was the last resemblance of his father.

Losing a mother was hard for him, even coming face to face with a killer robot wanting to shoot at a child like him. He thought how a being so ruthless and evil can want to kill a child. No. Not a being, an entire empire.

He was grateful to be saved by Alice who raised him as her son. Being with her, he thought of what he could be. With her help, they were able to find and awaken Alpha. He was able to find what he was with that monitor’s help.

He even discovered his mother’s past through her diary. Learning about how she met and fell in love with his father. But he also discovered that Seiton linked himself into the network and killed all the Spacers. He clutched the side of his head as he remembered hearing their painful screams. That demon, he thought.

For many years, he felt alone as being the last member of his race. He was out of place, mad at himself, and even afraid. For what he had been through, he was always afraid. He even had nightmares of Seiton stalking him. He was always looking around if anyone was going to strike him down.

He was defenseless. So Alice taught him how to fight all summer long. Many times he fell down by her lessons, but Alice got him up. They kept going at the lessons until he mastered them. No matter the day or weather, she kept training him until he was ready to face any enemy. Throughout his training, he felt strong, confident, and worthy. He wasn’t afraid anymore.

Throughout his youth, Alexander had made a few friends. Vyla was his best friend he ever had. Tak stayed with him and Vyla all of their school life. Alexander made another friend as well, David. David needed help to save his grandmother. Alexander was able to fight off criminals with Alice’s aid. David was able to live freely and become a Caster thanks to Alexander.

The Threshers returned for Alexander. He couldn’t believe that the portal was fixed and they went through it. Those robots killed more people than they did at Chartorla. This time Alexander was able to fight them. Both he and Alice fought them as they try to destroy the portal. Sadly, Alice sacrificed herself to destroy it and end the invasion. He fought off a Thresher general and won.

Thinking over the years growing up, his mother survived the Spacers’ extinction and gave birth to him. Alice rescued him and became his mentor. Alexander made friends who helped him get through school. He awoke Alpha and searched for answers of the Spacers. He was trained how to fight and became a master. Looking back, he had been scared of the outside cosmos as a young boy. But with everyone's support, he became brave. He believed in himself. He went from a curled up ball to a standing tall man.

He looked back at the people in the station and knew what he must do now.

**********

As Alexander walked near an entrance to the second hanger bay, he spotted Vyla and her family on a bench. Elora wrapped a big blanket around herself, Vyla and Villi. Villi sat on her mother’s lap while Vyla rested her head on her shoulder. They were all sobbing. Dr. Veelet rubbed Elora’s back and tried to wrap his arms around them. Alexander sighed sadly as her family lost their home, but he was relieved that they survived.

Vyla turned her head around and saw him. Her eyes widen and she got up from the bench to run to him.

He turned to Alpha and asked, "Could you please give me some time with her?"

"Of course," Alpha nodded as he hovered away.

Then Vyla snatched a very tight squeeze around him. He patted her back and hugged her. She cried into his chest. "You're alive! I thought you were dead!"

"Don't worry, I'm alive," he smiled.

She smiled and stopped crying. "Where is Alice?"

He sighed sadly and dropped his head.

She gasped and gave him another hug. "I'm sorry."

"She was the bravest woman I've ever known," he said.

Then Alexander thought of how this war would affect them. He cared about his best friend since the day they met. They had wonderful times together until their prom night. Many he knew lost their lives protecting him. He believed if she gets involved, she would be killed. He refused to let that happen.

"So what's going to happen now?" he asked.

"My family and I are going to Coralla where I'll finish school," she said. "Everyone else is going to other worlds to start over. Our classmates will be far apart from each other. But will still see each other now and then either online or visit."

"That sounds good," he said. "Just be safe."

"Stay with me. There is a special place on Coralla where you could live with me and my family," she slightly smiled. She held his hand like a warm cup of tea. "And we'll be together."

What she said gave him chills. He thought the Threshers were living all over the galaxy. Seiton was still out there searching for him. If he stayed with her, he’ll lose her. He shook his head, "I can't come with you."

"What?!" she clutched her chest like someone shot her in the heart.

"I'm sorry," he shook his head again.

"Why can't you stay with me?" she demanded to know the reason.

He swung his hand out of her hands. "I've been through a lot of since I was born! The Spacers died because of Seiton! My father died before I was born! My mother died in front of me when the Threshers came after me! I held her hand when she said her last words to me! Alice said goodbye and sacrificed herself to blow that damn portal of Hell! All these years, I've been trying to avoid anyone trying to kill me. Everyone I have been close to always meet the same fate, dead! I can't deal with this any longer! Dead! In front of me! It doesn't matter where I am or when it happens, everybody keeps dying before my very eyes! I'm sick of this! I'm done! I'm tired! Do you hear me? I'm tired!"

Vyla stood still, shocked as she never seen him suffered that much. He turned away and felt a sudden jolt when she snatched his hand. "If you stay with me, you wouldn't have to deal with it! Besides, Coralla is far away from them!"

He ripped his hand from her. "You don't understand I can't be with you anymore!"
She grabbed his hand again firmly as she begged. "Please, don't leave me! I don't want you to leave!"

"I have to leave!" he shouted trying to let go of her grip.

"Please Alex!" she begged. "What can I do to make you stay?!"

“Nothing,” he stopped struggle to be free from her grip. Her green eyes water as she tightened the grip more. She held it as hard denying he was leaving. He could remember the time where he didn't want his mother to die. He didn't want Vyla to follow that same fate.

"Vyla, you have to let me go," Alexander said softly.

"No!" Vyla squeezed his hand tighter and tears ran down freely her cheeks. She locked his hand so that he couldn't break free from her grip. His hand gasped for air as it was being pulled down to the floor. He twitched as the grip was becoming painful.

"Vyla, I cared about you," he said. "And I want you to live a safe and better life. You made a big impact on my life. You've been my best friend, my wonderful friend. I cared about you as much as you cared about me. But if I stay with you, I'll lose you. I can't risk it!"

    "Please stay!" she cried.

"I can't," he shook his head.

As she cried even more, she squeezed her hand even harder, cutting off his circulation. He never saw her cry in his life. He knew he was breaking her heart, but it was for the best.

"Let me go," he begged. "Please."

She took a deep breath and finally let go of his hand. He turned and sprinted down the hall. His numb hand was purple as he held it close to his chest. He could barely move it. His eyes began to water and his vision became blurred. Her crying to him faded as he reached the other end of the station. She was now gone.

In the last hanger, many people hustled around as a space vessel landed. It had two sets of wings at the end with a pair of thrusters. The ship’s front was shaped like half of a saucer. Alexander made a dash into the ship once the back hatch was opened. He got around piles of boxes as he got on board.

He sat on a small metal crate and covered his eyes. He let her go. He hated making that decision, but he felt that there was no other way to keep each other together. Alpha hovered behind and watched him wiped the tears off his face.

Alpha said, "I am sorry Alexander.”

Alexander muttered sadly, "Let's just get out of here.”

Looking out the window, he saw some people were trying to get onto other ships. Others stayed behind to help treat the sick and wounded. Children sat around crying for help. Elders walked around begging for food and water. Ones needed immediate treatment cried for help. There were a few marines trying to help one family at a time.

"No one should suffer like this," he kept saying in his mind. Then some looked at him as if he was the only one who could help them. As he saw suffering in their eyes, he felt the same pain he was feeling. He needed to end everyone's suffering for good. If he wanted this war to end, he must make sure no one gets left behind.

The ship rattled as it was lifted off the ground. He held on tightly to a bar above him as it began to fly out of the hangar. As the ship left the hanger of the Apollo Station, he looked at his charred planet one last time. Then the engines roared and he was slightly pulled back as the ship went into warp speed. He was never going to see his home ever again.
This is the saddest chapter I have written in my entire life! I think this is more sad than the death scene of Helen. This chapter is about the aftermath of the invasion of Purelif and what Alexander must do now. You might be mad at me for this chapter. The preview image was drawn by 0-xcheekymonkeyx-0 Check her gallery if you want to. 0-xcheekymonkeyx-0.deviantart.…
