Chapter 17:
Helen's Diary: Part 3

May 14, 2348

Alexander woke up and brushed his teeth that early morning. He put on some work clothes and went out to the garden to help Alice remove a ton of weeds. I couldn't wait to hear what would happened next in my mother's diary. He enjoyed hearing about her story in space. By listening to her diary, he wondered if their fate was related to the fate of the Spacers.

"Hey Alice," said Alexander while pulling tall weeds around the lawn. "I thought it was very exciting when my mother got to meet my father for the first time."

"And just in the nick of time," Alice added. "I can see that you are looking forward to find out what might happen next."

"This makes me feel good," he said.

&nbs"Let's find out after you run an errand for me," she said.

"I thought you want me to pull more weeds," he said.

"I changed my mind," she said. "I have already ordered ten pieces of oak plywood to fix up the deck a little bit. Can you get them for me?"

    "Sure!" he smiled.

After breakfast, Alexander left the house and headed to a small building just a block from the beach. This building was a hardware store with a big storage filled with plywood. He went in the building and walked up to the man behind the customer service counter. The man looked at his pad checking his email while waiting for a costumer.

Alexander asked the man, "Excuse me, may I have ten pieces of plywood?"

The man looked up and smiled, "Certainly, what kind of plywood do you need?"

    "Oak," said Alexander.

"Alright then, follow me," the man gestured him to follow.

The man grabbed a rusty cart and pushed it into a large back storage room. Shelves were filled with every kind of plywood. Alexander looked up thinking they might have to look forever. But the man took them straight to one shelf in the third row and pointed at the grainy boards.

"So, you need ten pieces of oak plywood?" the man asked.

    "Yup," Alexander nodded.

The man picked up one piece of oak plywood from the bottom shelf and placed it in the cart. It took him three minutes to pick up ten pieces of plywood.

He put the last wood in the cart. "Alright, there you go. Have a good day!"

Alexander came up to the cart and lifted all ten pieces of oak plywood. He laid them on his shoulders, so it would be easy to carry. Each piece of plywood was as light as a feather. The man opened his eyes wide as Alexander lifted all that wood without any pain or difficulty.

"Hokey smokes!" the man shouted. "You're really strong!"

    "Thanks!" Alexander smiled.

He left the hardware store as he carried wood back to his house. A young guys at a basketball court watched in amazement as he walked by. They talked to each other saying how strong this kid. A couple of their girlfriends giggled. Even a few of his fellow students playing in the park froze. Many were speechless; others shook their heads in confusion.

Then he saw David sitting alone under a tree. David wasn't paying attention to Alexander carrying all the plywood from the hard ware store. He was writing something in his journal as he sat under a tree. Alexander hadn't seen him for a while and he decided to talk to him.

    "Hi," he said to David.

David looked up and nearly jumped seeing Alexander carrying a bunch of wood on his shoulder. "Wow! Hi!"

    "How are you?" Alexander asked.

"Um, ok I guess," said David as he was looking at the plywood.

"I was at the hardware store getting some plywood for Alice."

"I can see that! How can you be so strong?"

Alexander shrugged. David closed his journal and said, "That is impossible! You can't be born with strong abilities. You have to gain them over time. You are Human, right?"

Alexander hesitated and said quietly, "I am not really Human."

"If you're not really human, then what are you?"

"I am only half-Human. I am a cross breed between Human and an extra-terrestrial race that no one knows."

"What? You're more complicated than I am!"

Alexander then realized that Alice might be waiting for him to return with the plywood. He looked at his watch and said, "Alice might be waiting for me. I should head back."

"Very well," David said. "See you around."

"See you around," Alexander nodded good-bye.

**********

Alexander walked back to the house with the plywood. He made it back to the house safe and sound. Alice nearly dropped her jug of coffee when she saw that he was carrying all the plywood that she asked him to get.

"Wow, look at all that wood you're carrying!" she shouted.

    "It’s no problem," he smiled.

"You took a while to get back here," she said. "I now know why."

"It wasn't hard to carry all of this back because of my Spacer abilities," he said.

"Definitely, why don't you lie them down and we will get started fixing the deck," she said.

Alexander laid them the plywood onto the deck. Then they pulled the worn and damaged plywood off the deck and replaced it with the oak plywood. With Alexander's help, they started fixing up the deck.

    "Hey Alice," said Alexander.

    "Yeah?" she asked.

"Did you remember about us talking about David?"

"Yeah I remember, his grandmother was said to be a Caster, which I highly doubt it is true. But I really don't know David very much. The Caster thing and family dispute was all I heard."

"I was talking to him after I got the plywood from the hard ware store. He said that I'm not an ordinary person and we seem to have a connection. But I am not quite sure."

"You're very unique with half of a Spacer DNA. Having that half of the DNA makes you able to lift all that wood."

"Sure does! Now, what can you tell me about the Casters?"

Alice stopped to take a sip of coffee. "I read conspiracies about Casters from Celtic stories written thousands of years ago. Well, those were top secret information we sealed it from the public before we realized that we Humans weren't alone. Then we forgot about those Caster stories. Luckily, I got a glimpse of one of them a few years ago. But no one has seen Casters before."

Alpha hovered over to join in the conversation. "Could you tell us more about them? This seems quite interesting. I never heard of Casters before either."

"Very well," Alice continued. "They were believed to be a very old sect, dating back earlier than the Bronze Age. Their magic differed greatly from that of shamanist priests. These priests spent years in meditation to achieve great mental strength, and would tap into ambient chi to channel it through the hand. Casters, on the other hand, would use the strength of their spirits, rather than their minds."

"What is chi really?" Alexander asked.

"I have no clue," Alice continued hammering the nails. "But this galaxy has a lot of things that we don't know. Maybe this Caster thing exists at the outskirts of the galaxy. But for now, it's unknown."

Alexander would like to get to know both himself and David. He could share his information about his hybrid life. He thought maybe David could possible reveal to him his Caster life. But first, he would like to get know more about his own family's past.

**********

Later, Alpha rested on a hammock with a large pile of cookbooks. He scanned each page and flipped to the next page. He kept flipping the pages as he scanned them. Then when he got to the last page, he threw the book away and got out the next cookbook.

"Alexander, I have been learning how to cook different kinds of food that you two should try," said Alpha.

"I'm sure we will," said Alexander.

"You can cook?" Alice asked Alpha.

Alpha said, "I have just scanned each recipe in each book and it gets stored into my memory chip. So now I know what ingredients you would need for a specific recipe."

"Well, that is good to know," said Alice.

"Wait, you're a Spacer Monitor," said Alexander. "Not a chef."

"Hey! Just because I am your father's monitor, doesn't mean I can't cook," Alpha crossed his arms.

"If you say so," said Alice still feeling unsure. "Alex and I will be playing his mother's diary."

"I'll listen while cooking!" Alpha saluted.

"I got a bad feeling about this," Alice shook her head.

"Let him try," Alexander said. "We probably don't have all the ingredients he needs."

Then Alice's ear phone rang. Alice picked it up to answer it. "Hello?"

She took if off her and handed it to Alexander. "It's Vyla. She wants to talk to you. Have a good conversation with her."

When Alice left to do some bench pressing, Alexander put the phone on his ear. He answered, "Hello?"

"Hey Alex," Vyla said. "How are you?"

"Very well," he nodded. "I was carrying ten pieces of plywood from the hard ware store to home."

There was a moment of silence. "You carried all that wood?"

    He nodded, "Yeah."

There was another silent moment. He thought she could be shocked by hearing how much wood he carried. But then she came back. "Well, this Saturday is going to be a meteor shower night and I was wondering if you like to come with Tak and I?"

"Really? That sounds like a great idea," he smiled. "I'm going to ask her right now!"

"Excellent," she cheered. "Hopefully I will see you then. See yay!"

    "Bye!" he hung up.

He ran down into the basement where Alice was bench pressing. She saw him and puts the weights down. He said, "Hey Alice, I was talking to Vyla on the earphone and she was asking me if I could go with her and Tak to see a meteor shower this Saturday night."

"That sounds exciting!" Alice smiled. "You would love that!"

"How often are there meteor showers?" he asked.

"Here, they don't happen very often. They only happen like a couple times a year," she said. "Go see them Saturday night. You'll have fun."

Alpha hovered down into basement. "I just put lasagna into the oven and should be down in about 40 minutes."

"Good work Alpha," Alexander smiled. "Let's listen to my mother's diary before it's ready."

As the three headed to the living room, Alexander wondered what would happened as Helen met his father again. Will it be good or bad? He placed the index on the coffee table and Helen's holographic image reappeared. Helen's story continued:

"As I went through the portal, I then found myself in a flooded forest with massive tall trees covered in vines. I walked through the strange jungle in hopes of finding Fabocusa. I found a river with footprints at the bank. I followed them when I was suddenly got trapped in a net.

“I struggled to break free as large disgusting people who looked like crabs emerged from the bushes. They pointed their spears at me as they exposed their long teeth. I screamed off the top of my lungs as one of them picked me. I feared I was about to become their meal or worse. I screamed for help and squirmed around in hopes of getting free.

“The crab people halted as Fabocusa stood in front of them. They dropped their weapons and bowed. The one who was holding me captive rolled me to him and bowed. Fabocusa ripped the net and carried me away for those creatures. He sprinted so fast that no one could run like that. Not for long we were on the top of a mountain.

“His friend Cahan and Alpha were waiting for us as we got to the top. Fabocusa put me down and asked me if I was alright. Then Cahan shouted at both of us thinking how I have discovered their portal. Fabocusa asked me why I would follow them. I explained to them how and why I went through. I wanted to know everything about them and what was beyond my world. I never thought there were other worlds too. Fabocusa understood why, but Cahan demanded that I leave and stay on my world. Fabocusa tried to defend me, but Cahan stated that he was Fabocusa’s high general and Fabcousa was prince to the Royal Family.

“Fabocusa believed that I would not tell anyone on my world about them. I promised them and Fabocusa safely escorted me back to the portal. When he got me back to my world, I thanked him for saving my life. He was proud that he did despite it being against their law. But I really didn't understand why he did it anyway. I asked him why me, but he didn't answer. He looked around and had to go. But I wanted to go with him and he told me it would be safer if I stay away from them. He didn't want to get in trouble with his people. But he promised me he would come to my world and visit me. He would even show me other worlds.

"Alpha accompanied me as I returned home. He told me that it was very risky because he had guards protecting him and would have seen me. But, he was happy to see me again even though we couldn't be together. He understood how much I felt about him, but he thought that our relationship would jeopardize everything.

"In my dream, I kept running to touch him. But just before I could touch him, I woke up. I felt it was not fair being without him. I felt like my life was a puzzle set with a missing piece and that missing piece was him. Everywhere I go, every time I am at, he was there in my mind. I belong with him.

"Then Fabocusa returned and he was happy to see me again. We secretly went through the portal and showed me another world with bird people. We watched them as we were alone at the top of their mountain. As he told me stories about his life, I loved listening to his voice. His voice was calm, kind, and graceful. I gave him a short about my life in Greece and he felt sorry for what I have been through. He was glad that I was free.

“As weeks went by, he always comes to visit me and we go to many different worlds. I got to see some people who looked like lizards and snakes; those who appeared like fish. Some of them were like big cats. We even got to look at those people who were talking crabs. I am always amazed to see many different worlds with a huge variety of beings on them.

“Whenever we’re alone, he sometimes showed me his strengths and fighting skills as he practiced. He was very intelligent, very stealthy, very graceful, very strong, and very kind. Whatever he showed me, I wanted more. I really didn't care what he was or what I am. No matter what race he belonged to, he had a warm heart; a warm Spacer heart.

"One evening, he came to my world again and we sat at the cliff facing the ocean. The full moon shined brightly over us. We gazed upon the moon and got back on our feet. Our heads drew closer. I stepped onto his feet as our faces got closer to each other until our lips met. His kiss released so much energy into my body making it nice and warm. The kiss was tingly, soft, and warm. I held him tighter as we kissed. I didn't know how long we kissed; I felt that time stopped for this. But I didn't care. I never wanted to let go of that kiss. When we stopped kissing, I told him I loved him. He finally told me that was the reason he saved me. He loved me.

"Falling in love with a Spacer was the rarest event no one had ever encountered before. We couldn’t let anyone know about our relationship. But Alpha knew I would keep this a secret. Days later, he came back with a gift, this beautiful amulet. He placed the amulet around my neck and I leaped onto him and we kissed passionately.

"Then he asked if I wanted to go to a world called Coralla, home of the Aquatics, I quickly said yes. We got there through the portal and found ourselves on a deserted island. There was a trail to led us to a waterfall with a small cove.

“The sun was setting and he dived into the water. As my feet touched the water, the water was as warm as a bathtub. As soon as my feet were in the water, I took all my clothes off and swam up to him. We swam in the small cove for a while until the stars came out. We looked as we saw the stars and they twinkled so much as if they performed a show just for the two or us. I was getting tired and then he carried me all the way to a small cottage with our big and soft bed. When he laid me down on the bed, it was the best night of my life.

"Ever since that night, I wanted to be with him even more. He was so incredible and amazing. I couldn't get enough of him. He was part of my life and I never imagine what my life would be without him. He was the most romantic man in the entire Universe.

"I then started to feel strange. I kept getting sick whenever I wake up in the morning; I kept going to the bathroom more often; I was feeling fatigue, and I had some strange cravings. He returned the next day and I told what was happening as I felt very concerned. He went back to bring a doctor only the doctor was not a Spacer, but an artificial humanoid looking like a floating beetle. When we got inside the examination room, he told it that I am Human and told it never told anyone about it. It examined me with strange devices sticking out of its limbs.

"When we found out what was going on, I was speechless! Hearing the news made me cry with tears of joy. He never felt so happy in his entire. Being deeply in love with him wasn't the only things that made me so happy. I thanked him for everything and kissed him passionately. When I let go of the kiss, I rubbed my stomach as we held hands. It was going to be perfect!"

Hobbes ran down the stairs and howled. Alice looked up and smelled smoke. She shouted, "Oh my god!"

"Is that the lasagna?" Alexander asked as he started coughing.

"Yes, it is!" She shot out of the couch and sprinted to the kitchen. Smoke puffed out of the cracks of the oven. She grabbed the gloves and swung open the door. Smoke erupted a column of smoke. Fire alarms blared all over the house. The lasagna was in flames. She grabbed the fire extinguisher and blast foam into the oven. The fire was out and they opened all the doors and windows to blow the smoke out of the house.

Alpha scanned the foam, "Fascinating, this foam is made up of film forming fluoroproteins from synthetic film-forming agents, which is very heat resistant."

"Alpha, you burned the food!" Alice shouted. "Why didn't you take it out 40 minutes ago?"

"I didn't time myself," he said. "I don't have a timer built in me."

"You could have asked!" she threw her hands up. "Well, we're not having fresh dinner tonight. I am heating up those leftovers."

"Sorry," Alpha said, turning his screen down to the floor.

"Next time, look at a clock to know how long it has been in the oven," said Alexander.

Later after Alpha's cooking disaster, Alexander rushed to the bathroom to brush to get ready for bed. Before he got into bed, he took out his diary and started writing.

"Dear Diary,

I helped Alice get the plywood she needed to fix up the deck. When I was walking back to the house, I stopped to talk to David. David told me that he know I am not an ordinary person and he was not an ordinary Human. If I told him about my hybrid abilities, he will reveal to me his secret life. Well, there will be so many things I will discover such as tonight I learned about my mother's romantic life with my Spacer Father. Tonight, she told me about how she tried to get to be with him. When she find a strange portal, she managed to see Fabocusa again and they fell in love. They had been in love for so long that she became pregnant with me! Now I am so close to finding out what happened to the Spacers. Tomorrow, will I find the answer to be thrilling, shocking, of horrifying. The only way I will find out is to listen more to her diary. Wish me luck!"
This next chapter will be about Helen explaining her love life with Fabocusa! Enjoy! The preview image was drawn by 0-xcheekymonkeyx-0 Check her gallery if you want to. 0-xcheekymonkeyx-0.deviantart.…

“Alexander woke up and spent a few minutes removing tons of weeds” … the jump from waking up to removing weeds feels a little quick, as if one happened right after the other. You could fix this a few ways: stress the waking up less, “Alexander had to remove a bunch of weeds and flowers from the garage after waking up the next morning” or put some action between the two, “Alexander woke up and brushed his teeth, put on some work clothes and went out to the garage where he removed a ton of weeds and flowers.”

“Thrilled when Helen met Fabocusa again, he hoped what would happen next” … this needs some re-writing, perhaps you meant something like, “He couldn't wait to hear how Helen would meet Fabocusa again and what would happen next”

“he felt close to understanding what happened to the Spacers” … um, why? Feeling close to understanding what happened to his mother and father I can see, but he doesn't know their fate is related to the fate of the Spacers

“it was very exciting when my mother got to meet my father for the first time … I am just looking forward to when they met again on the ship” … hmm, Alex and Alice are talking about those real events as if they are from an exciting television show they've been watching. Being real gives them a certain weight, and that makes the relaxed way the two are talking feel odd

“Alexander followed the man into the plywood storage. The man grabbed a cart to fill it with plywood. When they got inside the plywood storage room, the shelves filled with various types of plywood. The man looked at each shelf and found oak plywood” … too much repetition of the word plywood. Try something like, “Alexander followed the man, who grabbed an orange cart and took it into the back storage rooms. The shelves there were filled with what must be every kind of plywood, so many that Alex thought they might have to look forever, but the man took them straight to one shelf in the third row and pointed at the grainy boards”

“Is your mother going to pay for this? … She will come by today and pay you” … wow, this guy is sure trusting to give Alex the plywood only on the promise of being payed later. Maybe Alex could at least give the guy Alice's name

“A couple of guys at a basketball court watched in amazement as he walked by. They talked to each other saying how strong this kid was and a couple of their girlfriends giggled. Even a few of his [fellow] students playing in the park froze. Many were speechless and others shook their heads in confusion” … very fun scene, and very visual. I've noticed that whenever Alex performs his amazing feats, you make it very easy for me to see

“Not many kids were as strong as him” … this is clearly Shown from David's reaction, so you don't need to Tell it

“If you not really human, then what are you” … missing a word, it's like you copy-pasted from the previous line

“You're more complicated [than] I am” or “You're [as] complicated as I am”

“we will talk more about each other some other time” … so because David learned Alex's secret, now he wants to compare stories? This feels a little too easy

“His head raced after he talked to [David, unsure] if they were either going to become friends or enemies” … the second sentence felt wrong, a comma helps the two flow better … also, why does Alex worry about David becoming an enemy? That conversation seemed pretty friendly to me

“No, that is just a fairy tale” … a few lines up Alice was talking about the Casters as if they were real with all that description of chi and manna and them being record keepers, so I'm confused by her going back and stating they're a fairy tale here. Maybe add some unsure qualifiers above, “In fairy tales chi is a flow of energy” or “Popular legend describes the Casters using a rare source of natural energy”

“I guess that if your hybrid abilities are possible, maybe they are possible too. Who knows?” … is Alice really going to conflate science with magic like that? Gaining super powers from a mixed race heritage is wacky but also sounds plausible, while I can't imagine anyone deciding that magic might be real too from that

“Well, I never cook before” … mistake or Alpha speak?

“Wel,l that is good to know” … quick error to fix here

“You are not chef” … not a chef

“I got a bad feeling about this” … then why did she suggest he do it?

“I’ll be doing some bench pressing. When Alice left to do some bench pressing” … don't repeat things

“I will later asked Alice if that would be ok” … was this not dialogue before? The phrasing fits third-person POV narration, but for dialogue you want something like “I will ask Alice later if that's okay”

“They wanted to know what now that she would finally get to see his father again” … this sentence needs a re-write for clarity

“I put it on my arm and he told to think of who I wanted to look like. I thought about being a female Spacer would be an excellent disguise” … this doesn't sound like a makeup kit, maybe you didn't change this from when you previously had Helen get an illusion-creating thing

“We flew to his home [world Pandora] where he announced [he] was going to be their new king” … some errors here

“As we flew on the Paradise, he showed me each star and world that passed by” … in your new version, this is kind of glossed over. I actually like it better that they fly around looking at the stars, description of that would be good to add earlier

And the rest is recap of your new first chapters, which you might want to trim down here like the previous chapters. Alice getting out the tissues and crying and calling it beautiful and then Alex's journal entry would be enough to Show what parts of that story they listened to. I like how you broke up Helen's journal with random stuff like going to the store and talking to David
